In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, workers at all stores and supermarkets operated by Loblaw Companies Ltd. will be receiving a wage increase.
According to the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW Canada), ongoing discussions with Loblaw have resulted in a $2 an hour wage increase for front-line employees across the country.
The wage increase is in the process of being implemented and will be applied to the hourly rates of both full-time and part-time workers at all Loblaw stores and associated banners, the union said on Saturday, March 21.
“UFCW is fully committed to working with industry partners to face and overcome the challenge of containing COVID-19 and making sure that Canadians have a steady supply of essentials throughout this process,” said UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema.
The UFCW, which prides itself as Canada’s voice of grocery store workers, represents more than 90,000 Loblaw employees at all banners operated by the company.
“We commend Loblaw for showing leadership on this wage increase and call on other employers to follow this important example.”
