Mississauga's first murder of 2024

UPDATE: Story has been updated to include the latest information.

A woman and an 11-year-old boy were rushed to hospital following a disturbance at a west Mississauga home this morning (March 7).

Peel Regional Police say they responded to a “weapons dangerous” call shortly after 10 a.m. at a home in the Eglinton Ave. W./Southampton Dr. area, west of Winston Churchill Blvd.

Police say a woman was taken from the scene to hospital with serious injuries and that a child was also taken to hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

A second child, aged two, was also taken to hospital as a precaution to be assessed. That child suffered no physical injuries.

A man was taken into custody by police, and later taken to a trauma centre.

Police aren’t releasing any information about the specific nature of the injuries or the relationship between those involved.

However, reportedly, one person was stabbed.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified.

The SIU is a government agency that investigates police-involved incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Update: Police confirmed that a Peel officer discharged a firearm after arriving on the scene in response to the weapons dangerous/disturbance call.

However, the male suspect, 47, was not struck by the gunshot, an SIU spokesperson said this afternoon (March 7) from the scene.

The man, who at one point was naked and armed with a hammer and knife, was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries, according to the SIU.

Peel police Cst. Heather Cannon say that upon arriving at the scene just after 10 a.m., police discovered a woman outside the townhouse who was suffering from “obvious signs of trauma.”

Although reports suggest the woman had been stabbed, police would not elaborate on the nature of her injuries, again deferring to the SIU and its investigation.

Police say a 9-1-1 call brought them to the scene initially, but they wouldn’t say if that call came from inside the home or from somewhere else.

Neither Peel police nor the SIU would confirm that the four people involved are all members of the same family.

The SIU did say that the children involved are an 11-year-old boy and a two-year-old.
