A wintery blast of snowy weather is expected bringing possible hazards on the road.

Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory for tonight (Jan. 12) for southern Ontario including Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and Halton Region.

There could be heavy snowfall with total accumulations of five to 10 cm, more in areas north of the GTA, Environment Canada warns.

The snow could fall at rates of two to five centimetres per hour.

Strong wind gusts could bring reduced visibility in blowing snow, the advisory states.

The snow is expected to start in the evening around 6 or 7 p.m.

It will continue into the overnight hours and eventually transition to periods of rain tonight or early Saturday morning as temperatures rise above freezing.

Drivers should expect hazardous winter driving conditions tonight.

“Strong southeasterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h will combine with this heavy snow to cause significantly reduced visibility at times,” Environment Canada notes.

Avoid travel if possible and take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas, Environment Canada suggests.
