Residents are rallying around a wife and mother from Brampton injured in a car crash that left her husband dead.
Family and friends are mourning Santhosh Varma, a Brampton father and husband who was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Airport Road near Eagle Plains Drive in Brampton, shortly before 6 a.m. on Nov. 24.
Peel Regional Police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene, and community members supporting the Varma family have confirmed Santhosh was the victim.
But Santhosh’s wife Preetha was also hurt in the crash and was hospitalized with “significant injuries,” supporters say.
The couple has two children, one aged 15 and another aged 18.
“Words cannot describe the utter shock, disbelief and profound sadness in the aftermath of the sudden and tragic demise of Santhosh,” reads a fundraiser in support of the family started by friends of the late Brampton father, calling the crash “devastating.”
Peel police said a second victim was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
With so many from the Brampton community looking to help, a GoFundMe page was started to assist the Varmas with funeral expenses, education needs and ongoing support.
The fundraiser had collected nearly $18,000 of a $50,000 goal as of 4:15 p.m. on Monday.
“Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support during this dark hour,” the fundraiser reads.
Road closures were in effect for several hours following the crash, with southbound lanes of Airport Road closed between Yellow Avens Boulevard and Stonecrest Drive.
The Peel police Major Collision Bureau led the investigation into the fatal crash and no further details have been released by police.
