Weather warnings remain in effect today (June 18) for southern Ontario as the extreme heat continues.

Environment Canada has issued a warning for a “prolonged heat event”, citing dangerously hot and humid conditions expected throughout most of the week.

Daytime highs this week are expected to reach 30 to 35 degrees Celsius, feeling more like 40 to 45 degrees with the humidity.

A high of 33 degrees is expected on Tuesday afternoon, with a risk of thunderstorms starting later in the afternoon and continuing into the evening.

“There will be little relief through the overnight as lows are expected to be 20 to 23 degrees Celsius with humidex values of 26 to 30,” the weather agency says.

Extreme heat can pose potential health risks. The risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues.

Residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible, stay hydrated by drinking water, avoid strenuous exercise outdoors, and avoid leaving people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle.
