Many people have taken to social media to complain about a large street party in Brampton but the event was sanctioned by the city.

A video circulating online shows a large number of people dancing and celebrating on a Brampton street on the weekend.

The person who created the video confirmed the event was the annual Navrati celebration on Dawes Street in Brampton and it did have the proper permits and insurance.

A Peel Regional Police spokesperson told INsauga.com officers attended the Garba festival.

“The festival had a city permit for their event, along with several paid duty Peel Regional Police officers,” the spokesperson said in an email. “The event was peaceful and there were no issues.”

Navratri is major Hindu festival and the Dawes Street community in Brampton organizes an event annually.

Mayor Patrick Brown and other officials normally attend. Brown stopped by this year and posted about the event on Oct. 5.

“The Dawes Road #Navrati2024 garba in #Brampton was packed with local residents all night,” Brown wrote on X. “This great tradition from Gujarat is alive and well in our City this #Navratri.”

Nevertheless, people seeing the video online assumed it was an unauthorized event.

“This is complete nonsense. I – and many people like me – came to Canada to get away from this kind of nuisance,” said Darshan Maharaja on X.  “If they wanted to hold an event, they should’ve rented a venue. Causing a public nuisance is totally unacceptable.”

Several people responded with similar concerns about noise and a large gathering on a public street.

Right-wing news commentator Harrison Faulkner posted the video without context or further investigation on his social media.

“This video is from a residential neighbourhood in Brampton, Canada,” Faulkner wrote. “Imagine living on this street.”

His post has over 2,000 comments but many support the party.

“Quick! Someone call the fun police!” one person wrote.
