Violent ‘high-risk offender’ out on bail charged with gun, drug offences in Brampton: police

Charges have been laid against a Brampton man Peel Regional Police are calling “a violent repeat high-risk offender” after a loaded handgun was allegedly found during a traffic stop.

Peel police say officers were out on patrol around 12:40 a.m. on Saturday when they stopped a vehicle in the area of Bartley Bull Parkway and Main Street in Brampton.

That’s when police say officers found a loaded Glock handgun gun and an undisclosed amount of drugs which included opioids, leading to the arrest of a 29-year-old man from Brampton.

Devonte Rowe, 28, of Brampton has been charged with multiple offences including unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession for the purpose and two counts of possession of a firearm contrary to order.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and attended the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

Rowe is known to Peel police, with Chief Nishan Duraiappah calling him “a violent repeat high-risk offender” who was released on full parole in September.

In 2015, Rowe was charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault, including aggravated assault on a Peel Regional Police officer. He was reportedly convicted of abduction and robbery and sentenced to four years in connection to a botched kidnapping in Brampton.

“These egregious acts of violence will not be tolerated,” Duraiappah said in a statement. “Our officers work relentlessly to keep our community safe and are committed to ensuring that those responsible for these heinous criminal acts are held accountable.”
