A woman police believe to be responsible for a daylight carjacking in which a man was run over in Mississauga has turned herself in after the entire ordeal was captured in an online video that’s gone viral.
The violent auto theft happened around 2 p.m. on Sept. 6 at a home near Winston Churchill Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue when a woman showed up in response to an Auto Trader ad about a Porsche for sale.
Video captured by a security camera shows the woman asking to test drive the victim’s vehicle. She told him she was waiting “for her dad.”
But the woman enters the vehicle and hits the gas in reverse, striking the victim, who appears to get run over.
The carjacking led police to call on the public to help track down the female suspect as well as two vehicles investigators say were being driven by accomplices.
Video of the incident shared by Peel police made its way around the internet this week, gaining over 79,000 views on Peel Regional Police social media accounts alone.
Police say the accused is also linked to multiple fraud investigations in Peel, and the charges indicated she was driving without a valid licence at the time of the carjacking.
After receiving “numerous” tips from the public, Peel police say a woman turned herself in to investigators on Thursday.
Sarah Badshaw, 18, of Brampton, has been charged with dangerous operation causing bodily harm, theft of the motor vehicle, failure to remain after an accident resulting in bodily harm and driving with no licence.
“This type of community support (is) invaluable to us. We can’t do it without you and as you can see, it yields tremendous results,” Peel police Const. Tyler Bell-Morena said in a video update thanking residents for their help in the investigation.
An online posting for babysitting services, which appears to belong to Badshaw, states she is a student in Brampton.
We got her! Thanks everyone for your help. https://t.co/KlqFmktcsG
