Being involved in a crash can be stressful and scary, but police want you to know what to do if you get into a fender bender in Mississauga and Brampton.

In a video posted on Friday, Peel Regional Police have offered up some helpful tips for drivers who get into minor collisions on roads in Mississauga and Brampton.

If you do find yourself in a crash with no injuries or significant safety concerns, the first step is to exchange information with other involved drivers. Then you should bring the vehicle and driver to a police collision reporting centre where officers will take pictures of the vehicle and fill out a report, police say.

Be sure to bring your driver’s licence, registration and insurance card when you go to fill out the report. You’ll then get an accident number you can provide to your insurance provider.

If the crash happens on a residential street then you should head to one of three Peel police collision reporting centres, including at Shoppers World in Brampton.

But if the crash occurs on either Highway 403, 410, 407 or the QEW, then you’ll want to go to the Mississauga OPP detachment at 2735 Argentia Road in Mississauga.

If your vehicle is unable or unsafe to drive, then drivers are required to get a tow from the scene of the crash directly to a collision reporting centre. If you need a tow truck you can dial *OPP for service or call 511.

But some crashes are more serious, and police that you should call 911 the crash involves:

  • Personal injury or death
  • Any criminal activity, such as an impaired driver, stolen vehicles, assaults
  • A vehicle transporting dangerous goods
  • A person whose driver’s licence is suspended or is not insured
  • Damage to private, municipal or highway property
