A Brampton Transit bus was delayed by more than 30 minutes along its route on Saturday morning (Aug 13) when a man who had reportedly gotten on board without paying the fare got into a fight with a passenger.
A short, 4-second video clip posted to Reddit shows the inside of Route 7 bus where two individuals are involved in a physical altercation.
The incident happened near the intersection of Queen St. East and Kennedy Rd. North.
Peel Regional Police confirm that transit operators contacted police around 10 a.m. about a fight that had broken out on a bus.
However, police say the call was cancelled before any officers arrived on the scene because the man who refused to pay the fare had fled.
Comments in response to the posted video suggest that the man in the orange, high-visibility t-shirt is homeless and entered the bus from the back door while it was stopped.
The comments then go on to explain that the driver stopped the bus until the person who came in through the back door had left or paid their fare.
Another passenger on the bus, the man in the yellow hoodie, confronted the man in the orange shirt and told him to get off the bus.
Further comments indicate that the man in the orange shirt refused to exit the bus and that’s when the altercation took place.
Some viewers state the fault was on the man who jumped into the bus from the back, while others blame the bus driver for stopping the bus and demanding the fare.
“This is the drivers fault…. Why hold up an entire bus of ppl for a few $ and some change????… it’s not like it’s gonna come out of her pay,” one user wrote.
Another user said, “The TTC banned drivers from enforcing fares to prevent this very situation. Stopping the bus and sitting there is such a dick move and it ruins everyone’s commute. Why be so petty over the $3.25 that’s not going into your pocket?”
