Two days after torrential downpours closed roads and flooded basements, photos and videos are continuing to emerge.

Mississauga was one of the hardest hit in the storm with the most rainfall in southern Ontario. Between Monday and Tuesday, the Environment and Climate Change Canada weather station at Pearson Airport recorded 122.9 mm of rain.

The massive amount of rain on Tuesday (July 16) led to flash flooding and around 160 emergency calls at the peak in Mississauga. Flooding at Tyndall Seniors Village resulted in the evacuation of 116 residents.

Many people were trapped in vehicles after getting stuck in the rapidly rising water.

Dramatic video circulating on social media shows one incident, reportedly under a bridge at Dixie Road and Blundell Road, just south of Dundas Street.

The video titled “Mississauga tow truck drivers save a fedex driver from drowning” shows water levels up to the passenger side window of the delivery vehicle.

Someone is heard saying, “Did you call 911?”

“You know how busy they are?” another person responds.

“He is inside,” one man shouts to people, apparently tow truck drivers, who were already in the water.

And a short time later, “You got him?”

Two people are seen trudging through the water with the driver.

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services rescued many people during the storm, at one point checking on about 50 cars on Queen Frederica Drive.

There are hazards such as currents, drainage systems that could pull people in and possibly contaminated water in this type of flooding, Mississauga Fire told INsauga.com yesterday. Rescue boats and other equipment are typically used to get people out safely.

Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi advised people to take precautions.

“We urge all residents to prioritize their safety. Avoid driving or walking through flooded areas, as the depth and current of the water can be deceptive and dangerous,” she said. “If you need assistance, do not hesitate to call 911. Our firefighters are here to help.”
