A new spot for shawarma lovers that has a huge following on social media and even a Guinness World Record has opened in Brampton.
Founded by two college friends selling “mom’s recipe of traditional chicken shawarma from a dingy little food trailer in Lambeth,” Shelby’s Legendary Shawarma has expanded to 20 locations including its new Brampton restaurant on the corner of Mississauga Road and Financial Drive.
Shelby’s says it’s on a mission to modernize the shawarma while sharing the joy of making good food with menu items that are made fresh.
The new spot located at 85 Montpelier St. includes traditional shawarma beef and chicken wraps as well as creations like the shawarma burrito, bacon halloumi wrap and cauliflower shawarma maqluba.
There are also some more modern dishes like the shawarma mac and cheese, “fries boutine,” and chicken or beef bowls and vegetarian falafel options.
Along with great food, part of Shelby’s success comes from its marketing and social media presence, gaining more than 2.5 million subscribers on YouTube and 2 million on Tik Tok thanks to their lighthearted videos.
Shelby’s also set a Guinness World Record for the longest shawarma in the world took place in 2019 at the Ribfest festival in London, with the record-holding chicken shawarma wrap taking 50 kilograms of chicken, 10 kilograms of pickles, 16 litres of garlic sauce, 10 kilograms of fries and 150 saj breads to create.
Shelby’s Legendary Shawarma is open Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 85 Montpelier St. in Brampton
