A new robot security vehicle was unveiled at Pearson Airport in Mississauga.
The airport showcased the “first-of-its-kind” autonomous airfield inspection vehicle this week.
The autonomous vehicle aims to keep airport runways, taxiways and security fences safe, according to a press release from the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA).
The “proof-of-concept solution” would alert the GTAA to potential safety or security issues.
The vehicle, a collaboration between Honda, Illuminex AI, Genwave Technologies, Cisco and Eagle Aerospace, uses AI technology to provide real-time, objective, and distraction-free assessments/discrepancies on the airfield.
“Airports are constantly under pressure to ensure the safety of passengers, airplanes and operations, and we are always working with industry-leading partners to make sure we’re investing in a safe and efficient airport for everyone,” said Brian Tossan, GTAA chief technology officer.
Honda said the robot, called an Autonomous Work Vehicle, addresses challenges of labour shortages, safety and security and emissions reductions.
The vehicle can haul materials, attach or carry functional equipment such as sensors or a camera, and tow a maintenance tool or trailer.
In the Pearson Airport demonstration, the vehicle conducted an autonomous perimeter fence inspection showing its mapping and obstacle detection features.
The vehicle slows or stops to avoid colliding with an obstacle.
“Our demonstration of the autonomous airfield perimeter inspection leverages the Honda Autonomous Work Vehicle’s versatility as a mobility platform and aims to create new value for airfield operations,” said Jay Joseph, vice-president, sustainability and business development at American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
