Canadian rockers Our Lady Peace helped usher in Brampton’s 50th anniversary and ring in 2024 with an electrifying performance on New Year’s Eve.
The city’s annual free New Year’s event kicked off in Garden Square on Sunday night with host Just for Laughs comedian Jay Martin entertaining the crowd of hundreds of Bramptonians gathered to watch an evening of performances and a dazzling fireworks show.
Artists on stage included Young Cake, Ajhani Azure and DuoTang, as well as Brampton Arts Walk of Fame inductee and Juno award-winner Keshia Chanté and Canadian alt-rock icons Our Lady Peace.
“What an honour to ring in the New Year with the great people of Brampton,” the band said on their social media page, sharing a video of the band performing their Billboard top 40 hit “Innocent” in Garden Square.
The New Year’s event also marked the start of Brampton’s 50th anniversary celebrations, commemorating when Brampton first became a city on Jan. 1, 1974.
With a theme called Chapter 50: Telling the story of Brampton’s past, present and future, the 50th-anniversary campaign will run all year long and will include a huge Brampton Birthday Celebration on June 29 in Chinguacousy Park, a new 50th-anniversary Brampton Citizens Award category and a travelling exhibition by the Peel Art Gallery Museum and Archives (PAMA) highlighting Brampton’s history.
Other proposed anniversary initiatives include special Brampton Transit bus wraps, a 50th-anniversary photo opp in Ken Whillans Square, live performances, family-friendly events and free 50th anniversary memorabilia and swag at city events.
