You can nominate outstanding Bramptonians and honour their achievements in the fields of sports, arts, and community service with the golden anniversary of the Brampton Citizen Awards.

2024 marks Brampton’s 50th anniversary, which was officially turned into a city when Chinguacousy Township, the Town of Brampton and Toronto Gore merged in 1974.

Nominations opened last week for the 50th-anniversary Brampton Citizen Awards, which recognizes the impacts residents have on sports, arts and community at local, national and international level.

The Citizen Awards celebrate residents “who have demonstrated excellence in sports, arts and community service.” Last year’s awards also featured special categories for Celebrating Brampton’s 50th, both for individuals and organizations.

There are seven categories including the Sports Achievement Award, the Inspirational Award, the Ken Giles Amateur Athlete of the Year Award, and the Citizen of the Year Awards for individuals who have “demonstrated all-round community involvement.”

In a video posted on social media, Mayor Patrick Brown and Councillors Rowena Santos and Dennis Keenan urged Bramptonians to get involved and nominate an outstanding resident.

Last year’s winners recipients included Toronto Metropolitan University executive director Sharanjeet Kaur for her work on the TMU Brampton School of Medicine, and Grade 11 student Baileigh Nolan who created a set of paintings displayed at Brampton City Hall.

“By recognizing these achievements, the City is proud to highlight the dedication and talent of its residents,” the city says of the awards.

The nomination deadline for the 2024 Brampton Citizen Awards is on Jan. 10. Residents are encouraged to participate in recognizing and celebrating their community heroes.
