Update: Peel Region Police said the gathering is being considered an “unlawful assembly” and are clearing the area. Public Order unit has been deployed at the demonstration due to “weapons seen within the crowd.”

At 12:50 a.m. on Tuesday, police provided another update and said the crowds had dispersed. The roadway reopened but police continued to monitor the situation.

Large crowds of demonstrators have led police to close roads in Brampton days after protests turned violent, leading to arrests and the suspension of a Peel Regional Police Officer.

Peel police said on Monday night to expect closures on The Gore Road in Brampton as demonstrators took to the streets.

“Officers are trying to keep traffic flowing,” police said in an update.

Police say officers are on the scene and the northbound lanes of The Gore Road is still open while the southbound lanes are tied up.

Ongoing protests have seen clashes between supporters and opponents of the controversial Khalistan movement – a nonbinding vote happening around the world calling for the state of Punjab to break away from India and become a Sikh state of Khalistan.

Three people were arrested following demonstrations that turned violent on Sunday. A Peel Regional Police officer was also suspended for taking part in a Brampton demonstration that erupted into a brawl.

Sikhs For Justice said Sunday’s rally was against the presence of Indian Consulate officials inside the temple. The officials were visiting to provide administrative services such as helping seniors access pensions.

Monday’s gathering saw some protesters point their anger at Peel police with some in the crowd chanting “Peel Police, shame on you,” while others were calling on the Canadian government to take action against Khalistan supporters.

Police said to expect rolling closures on Monday night and to use alternate routes if possible.

“Please drive with caution,” police said.

Following Sunday’s demonstrations Peel Regional Police charged Dilpreet Singh Bouns, a 43-year-old man from Mississauga,  with cause disturbance, and assault a peace officer. Vikas, a 23-year-old man from Brampton, was charged with assault with a weapon. Amritpal Singh, a 31-year-old man from Mississauga, was charged with mischief over $5,000.

All three men will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton at a later date.
