Carjacked ride found in hit-and-run crash north of Brampton

Hold-up investigators are searching for a carjacking suspect who had just been released from custody after a stolen vehicle was found involved in a hit-and-run collision north of Brampton.

The carjacking happened in Newmarket on Aug. 3 around 6 p.m. when York Regional Police say a man approached a woman while she was pumping gas.

That’s when the 39-year-old suspect jumped into the woman’s vehicle and tried to make a getaway before a good Samaritan pulled in front of the victim’s vehicle to block the suspect in.

The carjacker then threw the victim’s vehicle in reverse to escape, nearly ripping off a door in the process. No injuries were reported in the carjacking, police said.

Video of the carjacking captured on a security camera shows the man casually enter the driver’s seat of the victim’s car before the woman also jumps in after the man. Several seconds later an SUV can be seen pulling in front of the car before it crashes into the side of the SUV.

The woman then jumps out as the suspect guns the engine, causing severe damage to the driver’s door as it catches on the gas pump.

Then around 9 p.m., the OPP located the carjacked vehicle at the scene of a hit-and-run crash near the Brampton-Caledon border on Mayfield Road and Bramalea Road. Investigators say the suspect fled on foot and escaped arrest despite officers using a drone and K9 units in the search.

A warrant has been issued for the 39-year-old suspect who had “just been released following a bail hearing” on unrelated charges prior to the carjacking, police said.
