A brazen home invasion has left a Mississauga neighbourhood shaken.

Two people were captured on video entering a home in Cooksville near Confederation Parkway and Hillcrest Avenue around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, the homeowner told INsauga.com.

A Peel Regional Police spokesperson confirmed that officers were called to the home for a break-and-enter.

Two men entered the backyard and smashed a patio door to get into the home, the resident said.

Video shows the men casually walking down the street through the alleyway to the backyard. The two men freeze when the backyard camera activates, and one man disables the video camera. The next camera shot shows one man enter the home through the smashed patio window and then an alarm sounds. He quickly turns around and runs out. The next shot shows the two men walking back through the alley and then running down the street.

Nothing was taken but the homeowner has to replace the patio window and the disabled camera.

The homeowners were out for the evening but were alerted to the break-in through their security system. It took about 15 to 20 minutes to get through to a dispatch operator on 911 but once they did, the police arrived quickly.

The resident created the video with the help of neighbours who provided their footage.

“This is an excellent example of how tech and communities can come together and help with the investigations,” he said.

He said many of his closest neighbours were happy to help and many were upset that this could happen during the dinner hour when many people were at home.

“Everyone was shocked that they’re so brazen at 6:30.”

The resident said his wife is having a hard time with the break-in.

“(Our) privacy has been invaded, and what’s going to stop them from doing it again?”

The couple has lived in the home for seven years and there has been very little crime. There was a similar break-and-enter in 2020 a few homes away.

“This shouldn’t be happening in our neighbourhood, because it’s a family neighbourhood, right.”

They don’t know what the criminals were after.

“Sometimes it feels like we were targeted, like they were watching the house,” he said. “But then we go, like, why would they, right? We don’t have anything, so maybe we just got unlucky?”

The culprits parked somewhere further up the street and walked to the home. The resident couldn’t get more video footage to identify a suspect vehicle.

Since the initial investigation, the resident hasn’t heard from police. He hopes by speaking out, the culprits will be caught.

A police spokesperson confirmed that two male suspects broke into the home but fled once the alarm went off. Police continue to investigate.
