The mother of a Brampton man shot and left for dead in a Toronto parking lot says her slain son’s friends know what happened and are urging them to come forward now that there’s a $5,000 reward on the table.

“We know that his friends know the where, when, who, how or what took place,” Brampton mother Adrienne Narine said through tears at a press conference in Toronto on Thursday.

“You boys played a role in our everyday lives. You boys promised to have each other’s back. Well, this is that time for you guys to have Amir’s back.”

Adrienne’s plea came days after the fifth anniversary of her son Amir’s homicide. The 21-year-old who his mother called “a remarkable, hardworking young man” was shot on the evening of Sept. 29, 2019, after attending a house party in Brampton with a friend and two unknown males.

But investigators say that the friend, who was also shot in the altercation, has given up “very little” information about what happened that night, said Det. Sgt. Aaron Akeson with the Toronto Police Service.

“I can tell you that we’ve made efforts to take statements from his friend,” Akeson told reporters, adding later that he is not currently considering bringing charges against the friend and hopes they “find it in them to provide us with the information they know.”

Police and Crime Stoppers are offering a limited-time reward of $5,000 for any information that helps investigators identify and apprehend those responsible for Amir’s death. The reward is only being offered until November 2024 in hopes of motivating anyone with information to come forward.

“Even the smallest detail can make a big difference,” Akeson said.

Akeson gave an updated timeline of Amir’s actions on the day he was killed, saying he visited his girlfriend in Brampton before driving to pick up a friend in Toronto’s Mount Olive area between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Amir also had two unidentified men with him, and the four then drove to Brampton for a party.

But that’s where the trail goes cold for several hours as police say they’ve been unable to locate where the party took place.

Then around midnight, security cameras captured Amir’s vehicle being parked at a plaza at 2700 Kipling Avenue. Police say Amir had already been shot by that time, and two unidentified men can be seen exiting the vehicle and walking northbound.

It wasn’t until around 7:00 p.m. that his lifeless body was found in the car by two other unknown individuals, also captured on security camera. One of the men can be seen walking up to Amir’s car and peering inside before a call was made to 911 reporting “a male slumped over in the vehicle.”

Akeson said the lack of cooperation from Amir’s friend has been frustrating for police and there’s no indication the shooting is tied to organized crime.

“This isn’t about being a rat, this is about putting Amir to rest in peace and finding justice for Amir,” his mother said while calling on anyone with information to contact police, anonymously or otherwise.

“Only you guys know his last words, my boy deserves to be rest peacefully,” she said. “Please help a mother, please help his family find closure.”

Police are asking anyone with information on the unidentified males to contact investigators.

The driver is described as short, wearing a hat, a light-coloured shirt and light-coloured runners. The passenger is taller than the driver and was dressed in dark clothing, also wearing light-coloured runners.
