Victim forced into sex trade leads to charges for Brampton man: police

Police say a Brampton man has been charged after a woman in the GTA was exploited and forced into sex work.
The Peel Regional Police Vice Unit says they arrested a 23-year-old man following an investigation into “sex trafficking offences.”
Few details were released by investigators, other than the victim is over the age of 17 years old.
Peel Regional Police say a 23-year-old male from Brampton has been arrested and charged with multiple offences related to the investigation.
Jahmal Paquette, 23, of Brampton have been charged with several offences including four counts of utter threat to cause death, two counts each of procuring and fail to comply with release order, assault – female over 17, and exercise control.
Investigators believe there may be more victims and are asking anyone with information about these incidents to contact police.
Peel police say human trafficking is a province-wide issue but that “all roads lead to Brampton” due to the city’s proximity to 400 series highways and Pearson International Airport as well as a large number of students.
The city has been raising the issue of exploited female students for months after INsauga.com reported on an online ad offering free rent in exchange for a “friends-with-benefits relationship” in Brampton.
The city has called on its academic institutions to build and provide housing for its students, as well as provide training to international students on sexual exploitation and consent.
