Canadian veterans and their families in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Halton, Durham and Niagara can ride GO Transit for free on Remembrance Day, which falls this Friday (Nov. 11).

Metrolinx, the provincial agency that runs GO, said in a news release this morning (Nov. 9) that once again this year veterans, current Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, their companions, family and family of deceased veterans are all eligible to ride GO trains and the UP Express (Union Station in Toronto to Pearson Airport) for free on Nov. 11.

GO has been offering the free transit service on Remembrance Day for years.

With the current GO Transit strike taking all GO buses off the roads this week, it’s uncertain if those vehicles will be available to offer service to veterans or the public on Friday.

However, with striking workers set to return to the bargaining table on Friday, the buses may return as well. Metrolinx has not yet said if the GO buses will run on Remembrance Day, though.

“Remembrance Day is a solemn occasion across Canada as veterans, their families and members of the Canadian Armed Forces travel to participate in ceremonies across the province,” Metrolinx officials said in the news release.

Metrolinx reminds family members and companions of veterans to bring along documentation to get the free transit ride.
