Snow is back in the forecast for New Year’s Eve in Ontario.

After mild temperatures, heavy rain and wind this week, the weather is expected to turn again.

A system is expected to move through the province bringing 10 to 20 cm to some areas, according to Instant Weather.

The precipitation is forecast to start gradually Tuesday afternoon transiting to snow in parts of the province as revealers ring in the New Year at midnight, the weather forecaster states.

The snow is expected to continue through New Year’s Day.

The heaviest snow accumulation is likely to be in central and eastern Ontario.

Environment and Climate Change Canada forecast a more modest amount of snow — around 10 to 15 cm in areas north of the GTA.

In the GTA, around two cm of snow could fall on Wednesday with more snow expected through the week as temperatures drop, Environment Canada said.

With a temperature high around 4 C on Tuesday and 3 C on Wednesday in the GTA, the snow likely won’t stick. It could drop down to 1 C New Year’s Eve.

There is a chance of snow for each day this week in the GTA.

“Significant” weather outlooks with snow squalls are expected Thursday for communities near Georgian Bay, Lake Superior and east of Lake Huron, according to Environment Canada.

The lake-effect snow machine is expected “to roar back to life, potentially resulting in a multi-day snow squall event,” Instant Weather said. Snow belt regions near Lake Huron and Georgian Bay could see significant snowfall, with totals approaching 50 cm by the end of the weekend.
