U.S. winter storm cancels flights to major city from Pearson Airport in Mississauga, Ontario

At least eight scheduled flights from Pearson Airport in Mississauga to New York City were cancelled today due to a nasty winter storm that packed a considerable punch for much of the U.S. Northeast.

As of late Tuesday morning, airport officials said airlines had cancelled eight flights from Pearson to LaGuardia Airport in New York City.

They added 16 additional flights to that U.S. airport were scheduled to leave Pearson throughout the remainder of the day. It’s not known at this point if any of those flights were cancelled.

Several people who commented on LaGuardia Airport’s X site (formerly Twitter) noted that numerous travellers were stranded inside terminals there while they waited for their flights, many of which were delayed by hours.

“The weather’s throwing a curveball at JFK and LaGuardia today,” one commenter noted, referencing New York City’s other major international airport as well. “Flights are delayed and passengers are stuck in the terminal looking more lost than a tourist in Times Square.”

Meanwhile, the weather at Pearson and across the GTA was clear, for the most part, and no flights were cancelled due to any wintry conditions in southern Ontario.

Earlier this morning, the snowstorm that held the U.S. Northeast in its grip forced cancellations of flights into and out of Pearson including trips scheduled to and from New Jersey, Boston and Philadelphia in addition to the Big Apple.

Canada’s East Coast was also hit again today, one week or so after getting hammered with record amounts of snow.

Airlines early Tuesday morning cancelled eight scheduled flights from Pearson to Halifax Stanfield and four flights from Halifax Stanfield to Pearson, the airport said in an earlier post to social media.
