A U.S. coffee chain is opening in a historic Mississauga building.

Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co., a U.S. chain with shops in Michigan, Texas and Illinois, plans to open in Streetsville.

The new shop will open at 271 Queen St. S. in Streetsville, according to their website.

The long-vacant building has been undergoing a heritage restoration. The historic building was an Odd Fellows’ Hall from 1875 to 1956 and a glass and paint store in more recent years. It was designated as a heritage property in 1983.

Founded by two Yemeni entrepreneurs Hatem and Munif, Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co., sources conflict-free Yemeni coffee beans. After over nine years of conflict, Yemen has one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world, with around 9.8 million children in need of one or more forms of humanitarian assistance, according to UNICEF.

Qamaria works with farmers who have continued harvesting coffee beans despite the difficult circumstances.

Once transported, the shop roasts the beans, creating different flavour profile coffees as it is done in villages across Yemen. The coffee is blended with spices and herbs.

Yemen is one of the first places where coffee beans were consumed as a drink. The country has been drinking coffee for over 500 years.

The cafe serves espresso drinks and chai. There are unique coffee combinations on the menu including a pistachio latte.

Pastries include a milk cake and a sweet bread stuffed with cream cheese.

The new coffee shop is currently hiring — see the job post here.

The opening date has not been announced.
