Two Mississauga restaurants won a $10,000 DoorDash and Black Opportunity Fund grants.

Honey Soul Food at 5977 Dixie Rd., and Souperlicious at 400 Dundas St. E. were two of 17 Black-owned and Black-led businesses to win the grants, DoorDash Canada and Black Opportunity Fund said in a press release.

Honey Soul Food is a “soul food restaurant with a southern flair” serving chicken wings, sandwiches, cajun shrimp and cornbread.

Caribbean restaurant Souperlicious serves soups, porridges, patties and fusion burritos.

Grant recipients are from across Canada with cuisines from Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, and beyond. Each awardee clearly showcased what Black Food Energy means to them, in addition to highlighting how they intend to use the $10,000 grant to support the growth of their business, the release states.

“We were nothing short of inspired reading the individual stories of Black chefs and Black restaurateurs highlighted in each application, as the passion exhibited by these entrepreneurs is unmatched,” said Delly Dyer, head of consumer brand marketing at DoorDash Canada.

The Black Opportunity Fund said they were extremely pleased to partner again with DoorDash Canada to provide grants to some amazing Black Canadian restaurants.

“Food is such an important part of sharing culture and bringing people together. Each of these restaurants have a unique story to tell and are an important gathering place in their community,” said Craig Wellington, CEO of Black Opportunity Fund.

“We’re incredibly excited to see these businesses continue to flourish and we look forward to celebrating even more Black foodpreneurs with future grant cycles to come.”

Honey Soul Food told INsauga winning the Black Opportunity Fund and DoorDash grant has been an incredible moment.

“It feels like a real acknowledgment of the hard work and love we’ve put into building this restaurant, and it means so much to know that others believe in our vision,” a Honey Soul Food spokesperson said in a message.

The restaurant owners plan to use the funds to improve their infrastructure.

“These upgrades will make a big difference in how we operate day-to-day, helping us serve our customers better and support our team as we continue to grow,” they said. “We’re beyond grateful for this opportunity and are looking forward to what it will mean for our community and our mission.”
