Canada’s biggest night in music further proved Brampton is a hotbed of hip-hop and reggae with wins by two local artists at the 2024 Juno Awards.

Halifax played host to the annual awards show on Sunday, which saw Nigerian-born and Brampton-raised rapper TOBi clean up with two awards – one for Rap Single of the Year for his track “Someone I Knew” and Rap Album/EP of the Year for his record “PANIC.”

One of the wins is a repeat for TOBi, who won the award for Rap Album/EP of the Year for his three-song release “Shall I Continue?” in 2023.

“This is for everybody who lent a hand to this project, proud of this,” TOBi wrote on an Instagram post following the win.

The Brampton rapper was up against another local talent, Haviah Mighty, in both categories. Haviah Mighty was also nominated for her collaboration with artist 4Korners in the Reggae Recording of the Year category and was previously nominated for Best International Flow at the 2022 BET HipHop Awards.

But that award went to Brampton reggae recording artist and previous Juno winner Kirk Diamond for the song “Dread.”

Local music teacher Zeda Ali was also at the ceremony after being nominated for a $10,000 prize and the title of Canada’s music teacher of the year. The award went to music teacher Stephen Richardson from École St. Joseph School in Yellowknife.
