Tropical Storm Helene has forced the cancellation of flights out of Pearson Airport in Mississauga.
The storm was just off the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and close to hurricane strength, the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday before 8 a.m.
A state of emergency was declared in Florida Tuesday night as Helene approached.
Flights between Pearson Airport and Cancun are either cancelled or delayed today due to the storm, Pearson said in a post on X.
More flight cancellations are likely for travellers to Florida.
“Travellers bound for Florida in the coming days should check their flight status with their airlines, as forecasters warn that Tropical Storm Helene may strengthen into a major hurricane as it approaches the southeastern U.S.,” Pearson said.
Several airlines have issued travel alerts for airports that could be impacted, including, but not limited to, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville and Miami, the airport said.
