Those looking for something different to do this weekend may want to check out a tree-climbing competition in Mississauga.

The 34th annual Ontario Tree Climbing Championship is happening in RK McMillan Park, 830 Aviation Rd. on Friday and Saturday, according to the Ontario Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture.

The free event showcases arborists from across Ontario in action demonstrating the skills needed to work safely and efficiently in trees.

Arborists compete in multiple challenges, such as a timed speed climb, a work climb, an ascent event using specialized equipment and an aerial rescue. Winners can go on to compete at the International Tree Climbing Championships.

Early Saturday afternoon, climbers will attempt to break the “Ascent Event World Record.”

The two-day event also includes free educational workshops such as chainsaw maintenance and personal protective equipment inspection. Workshops are free to attend and pre-registration is not required.
