Two Brampton truckers have been hit with a careless driving charge following a crash in poor weather conditions that closed part of an Ontario highway, police say.

The OPP says there were two “significant” collisions on Highway 11 yesterday involving commercial vehicles, including a pile-up involving six transport trucks.

The first crash happened around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday while police say they were working traffic control on the highway while a transport truck was being pulled from a ditch.

That’s when police say the driver of another truck slammed into the crashed truck from behind.

A passenger in the vehicle suffered serious but non life-threatening injury in the crash and was rushed to hospital by ambulance, police say.

Then about an hour later, officers with the James Bay OPP were called to another collision on Highway 11.

Police say the pile-up collision involved six commercial vehicles around 120 kilometres west of Hearst and led to closures on the highway.

One driver from Saskatoon was charged in the first crash, while three drivers including a 30-year-old from Brampton and a 29-year-old from Brampton were both charged with careless driving related to the second crash.

The names of the accused have not been released.

Highway 11 was closed for several hours and finally cleared in both locations by 4:00 p.m.. Police say weather and road conditions remain challenging across the James Bay area and are advising caution.
