Tracks are being laid at a busy intersection near the QEW in Mississauga as work continues on the $4.6-billion Hazel McCallion light-rail transit route.

Project leaders overseeing the massive Mississauga-to-Brampton transit initiative said in an online update on Wednesday that with foundational work in the area largely completed, tracks are now being dropped into place along Hurontario Street just south of the major highway.

Officials with Metrolinx, the provincial agency in charge of the Hazel McCallion Line LRT project, noted that part of the city “is seeing more guideway and track activity, with track installations underway at Mineola Road and Hurontario Street.”

They added work crews will remain in the area until late summer to install tracks where the 22-kilometre LRT line will eventually run along Hurontario Street from Port Credit GO all the way north into Brampton.

“To minimize disruption to nearby schools, construction is taking place during the summer, balancing necessary progress with community needs and ensuring the most intensive work is completed before the new school year begins in September,” Metrolinx officials said in their update.

Meanwhile, motorists and area residents can expect continued traffic delays and increased noise for the rest of the year as various tasks are completed along the route.

Project leaders said earlier that motorists, businesses and residents will experience lane closures, restricted turning areas and other minor disruptions until the end of December on the section of Hurontario Street from the QEW south to Park Street by Port Credit GO station.

Most of the road work is scheduled to take place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through the end of 2024.

Officials added some overnight and weekend work might also be required as project leaders aim to have the LRT line ready to take its first passengers by sometime in 2025.

When completed, the Hazel McCallion Line will whisk riders from Port Credit GO in south Mississauga all the way north into Brampton via Hurontario Street, with more than 19 stops along the way.

Metrolinx received the go-ahead from the province in early February to extend the line by three or four kilometres into downtown Brampton and reintroduce the “downtown loop” to the City Centre area of Mississauga. The latter component will add several stops to the route.
