Toronto cop cruiser crashes with ATV sending 2 teens to hospital

A pair of teens were rushed to hospital and Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a Toronto police cruiser crashed with an all-terrain vehicle.

The collision happened on around 10:30 p.m. Monday in North York after officers with the Toronto Police Service saw an ATV being driven by a 13-year-old youth with a 12-year-old passenger, the province’s Special Investigations Unit says.

That’s when a police cruiser crashed with the ATV in the area of Shepherd Avenue West and Laura Road, just north of the Oakdale Golf & Country Club, investigators say.

Both of the youths were injured in the crash. Investigators say the 13-year-old driver had to be cut out of the wreckage while the 12-year-old fled the scene but was located by police shortly after.

The teens were taken to hospital for treatment but did not suffer serious injuries in the crash, the SIU says.

The province’s police watchdog agency says it is “investigating the circumstances” surrounding the crash and has assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have information about the investigation or the crash, including video or photos, to contact the SIU by calling 1-800-787-8529 or online at www.siu.on.ca. Anonymous tips may also be provided to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
