Brampton’s Zach Pop will be playing closer to home soon — the Toronto Blue Jays just announced they have acquired the pitcher.

In a tweet, the Blue Jays announced they have traded Pop and Anthony Bass from the Miami Marlins in exchange for Jordan Groshans.

Pop made his debut in Major League Baseball with the Miami Marlins in April 2021. The 25-year-old was born and grew up in Brampton. He attended the University of Kentucky.

He was close to signing on with the Blue Jays earlier in his career. Pop was Canada’s top high school pitching prospect in 2014, when the Blue Jays drafted him in the 23rd round. But he didn’t sign and honoured his commitment to Kentucky.

Pop works in the mid-90s, can reach back for 97, and in the past has been up to 99 mph with a plus-plus sinker that he throws from a lower arm slot, according to Marlins.com.
