Tornado threat, thunderstorms and heavy rain possible this week in southern Ontario

There is a tornado threat as well as a risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms this week in southern Ontario.

The last week of August has started with hot and humid with a high of 30 C  in the forecast for Monday.

But thunderstorms are possible over parts of southern Ontario on Tuesday and Wednesday, Environment and Climate Change Canada said in a post on X.

The main hazards are strong wind gusts, hail, heavy rainfall, and a tornado threat over portions of southern Ontario on Tuesday, the weather forecaster said.

Tuesday’s forecast includes a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of showers, changing to a 70 per cent chance in the afternoon for Mississauga, Brampton, Burlington, Oakville and Durham Region. There is a risk of a thunderstorm throughout the day.

The risk of a thunderstorm continues overnight.

On Wednesday, cloudy skies are expected with a 60 per cent chance of a thunderstorm.

There is a minor risk of more severe weather including a tornado, wind gusts and heavy rain on both Tuesday and Wednesday for the GTA area including Mississauga, Brampton, Burlington, Oakville and Durham Region.

The severe storm risk is moderate in areas north and west of the GTA.
