When you are hungry there is nothing better than a good roti and Mississauga has some good selections. Here are the top 5 places to get your roti fix in Mississauga:
5 – Calabash
There’s a plaza located at QEW and Erin Mills Parkway that houses some great food gems. There are Mexican, Vietnamese and Afghani restos in the plaza, but today we were visiting a Caribbean cuisine joint called Calabash. This place has everything from fried snapper to oxtail on rice, but the first thing on the menu is roti. This place has a nice atmosphere and the food is brought out to your table, which is a nice. The roti was delicious, but it could have been a little bigger based on the competition.
4 – The Original Jerk Closed Down
Located in west Mississauga in a huge plaza by Ridgeway and The Collegeway is a place that has been around for 20 years called The Original Jerk. This place is a real Jamaican-style restaurant with enough Obama posters to show you how much he’s aged over eight years. The food is absolutely delicious and the spices on the meat, especially the chicken curry roti, are incredible.

3 – Charlie’s Caribbean Cuisine
Charlie’s is located right in the heart of Mississauga at HWY 10/Dundas across the street from my old high school, TLK represent! Charlie’s is not only a restaurant, but a West Indian grocery store as well. The best part about Charlie’s is the restaurant and let me tell you, the grub is killer. Like many Guyanese restaurants, they have both West Indian curries and Guyanese Chinese cuisine. Check out the size of this baby! Big chunks of chicken too. Little advice: get their hot sauce that is soooo good they bottle it and sell it at the grocery store. It was sold out.

2 – Shandra’s
Tucked away in a hidden strip mall on Eglinton between Tomken and Dixie is Shandra’s Roti Shop — one of the best and most popular roti shops. Shandra’s has been around for 20 years and that speaks volumes. With a variety of roti’s, rice dishes and Caribbean appetizers, you can’t leave without being satisfied. Today we tried the chicken curry roti and it was delicious. The chicken was nice and moist and the potatoes were cooked to a perfect softness and the spices were exactly what you wanted. Expect to stand in line at lunch.

1 – Leelas Roti
Leelas Roti and Doubles — located in an unassuming plaza on Rathburn west — is the best roti shop in Mississauga. I’d heard a lot about this place, so I was excited to try the chicken curry roti and it did not disappoint. The chicken curry was flavourful and cooked to perfection. The chicken to potato ratio was great on the chicken side. The roti itself was so soft and the combination blended together perfectly. They also have some great specials, like $3 rotis on Tuesdays. Wednesdays are $3 chicken munch — boneless chicken (dark meat) wrapped in a thin paratha. That is an entire meal under $5! It’s like living in the 90s again! Expect to stand in line at lunch though.
On a side note: We tried going to Barb’s Roti Shop on Lakeshore but unfortunately it was closed the few times we attempted. The last time we were there we asked the cleaners next door and they mentioned they have been closed since December 2013.
We have since heard rumours that they might be opening again but we went to try it January 2016 but still not open. That is too bad since they have been around since 1981.
