Top 5 Fish and Chips restaurants in Mississauga

If you want to see the history of Mississauga, look no further than your local fish and chips joint. The top five fish and chips places have been in business for a combined 150 years. Yup, I said 150 years.
Fish and chips have obviously stood the test of time and survived all revolving food trends over the past 50 years.
Is it the fried fish, the fries and the coleslaw or just the combination of all that on the same plate that appeals to us so much? Either way, here are the top five fish and chip restaurants in Mississauga:
5 – Cooksville Fish and Chips (Over 50 years)
This place has been here for over 50 years! If you blink, you will never see it because it’s not even on a major road. Even though the address says Dundas, it’s actually off a side street. This place is a hole in the wall with mismatched seats and tables, but one thing is for sure — they know how to cook good fish and chips and have been doing it since the plaza opened more than 50 years ago. Just to put this in perspective, this place was built before Mississauga became a city. It was built before Hazel became the mayor of said city. Check it out.
4 – Applewood Fish and Chips (Over 30 Years)
Located in a plaza at Tomken and Burnhamthorpe is a place that has been owned by the same family for the past three decades — Applewood Fish and Chips. If you ever want to see what a restaurant looked like in 1984, look no further than this place. This place is old school from the tables to the chairs to the art work on the wall — absolutely classic. But make sure you bring cash because that is all they take.
3 – Homestyle Fish & Chips (Over 20 years)
Located in a plaza at Creditview and Eglinton is a place that has been around for over 20 years called Homestyle Fish and Chips. We were here on a Friday at lunch and this place was just rammed. We were lucky enough to find a two seater at the back to eat our Halibut and Chips. The manager mentioned that they get fish every morning and cut them in to slabs for us to enjoy, battered and fried. This was the only place on this list that had the tartar sauce in a squeezable bottle, so it’s all you can have sauce without opening packets like a child.
2 – Country Fish and Chips (Over 40 years)
Don’t blink — because if you do, you will pass County Fish & Chips when heading east on Lakeshore from HWY 10 in Port Credit. Henry, the current owner, is a second generation fish and chip-taur. When you first walk into this place, you can tell they have spent a little more time on the interior of the restaurant. It’s so cute inside and if there was a “look” for a fish and chip shop, you would think this is it. The place looked familiar. I asked Henry if it was renovated recently and he mentioned that they were on Restaurant Makeover. This place has been around for over 40 years and I can tell you that they will be around for another 50 if they keep serving the fish and chips they do. Delicious!
1 – Mississauga Marketplace Fish & Chips
Located in that huge plaza on Eglinton and HWY10 is Mississauga Marketplace Fish & Chips. When you first walk in you see that dining room is very bright, nice and inviting. You are greeted by the server who is also very nice. We got the halibut and fish, which we ordered at every resto. The fish was perfectly cooked with a crunchy golden skin that was surprisingly not greasy. The fries were fried to perfection and looked home cut. This place is the only one on the list that actually makes tartar sauce from scratch and they gave us more once we were low without asking.
