Top 5 Chinese Takeout Joints in Mississauga
Published January 6, 2015 at 8:44 pm
There are two types of Chinese takeout joints in Mississauga: ones that give you fortune cookies and ones that don’t. The ones that don’t tend to be a little more authentic and the ones that do usually have chicken balls on the menu. Both styles serve the same purpose — satisfying whatever needs a customer might have.
Good Chinese takeout is a combination of price, quantity, time and overall taste. Yes, any Chinese restaurant can do takeout, but these bad boys specialize in making quality quick-service Chinese food. They’ll get you in and out with General Tso in 10 minutes, so you’re free to enjoy your tasty meal with family or alone in your condo with a movie (sounds depressing, but it’s really not!).
Here are the top 5 Chinese takeout joints in Mississauga:
5 – Chinese Express Takeout
Chinese Express Takeout is located on the west side of Port Credit on Lakeshore and has been around for over 10 years. If you try to picture the quintessential Chinese takeout place, you will inevitably picture this place — even if you’ve never seen it. There is a counter to order from and five seats for you to sit on while you wait for your food, and the food you get here is actually really good. They have everything from Szechuan and Mandarin dishes to the classic sweet and sour spare ribs and chicken balls. They have specials, too.
The Great Wok of China is located at Central Parkway mall just east of City Centre on Burnhamthorpe. I know this place is a sit-down restaurant, but in all my years of coming here, I have never, nor have any of my friends, ever dined in — and there is a usually a line up for takeout. This place has been around for more than 25 years and has been serving consistently great Chinese food. This place gives out fortune cookies, so you will see Canadianized Chinese food here (but they do it very well). The Great Wok of China’s chicken balls probably have the best chicken to batter ratio out there, so they’re more than worth a repeat visit.
3 – Star Fast Food
This place is a gold mine of Chinese takeout and it’s open 365 days a year from 9 am to 9 pm! Located in Mississauga’s new Chinatown at Creditview and Burnhamthorpe, The Star Fast Food is a place you might have to search for. Look for the karaoke bar beside it. Once you walk in, you can’t help but look at all the wall menus that have specials on them. There are daily specials, online specials, lunch specials and more (you can find them all on their Facebook page). This place has about 200 menu items, including curry beef brisket, seafood pineapple fried rice and French fries for the timid diner. The food was made to order and ready to go within eight minutes. The sweet and sour chicken was as perfect as can be for Chinese takeout, as it was conventionally seasoned and sauced, but not too salty. We had the salted fish with chicken fried rice and it was the best rice dish we had on this top 5. This place is even open for breakfast at 9 am, so you can get three square meals here. Like most good Chinese places, they don’t accept debit or credit cards, so if you don’t have cash you’ll have to walk to the nearby TD.
2 – Dixie Park
You will not find chicken balls here. Located on Dixie by Eastgate is the wonderland of Chinese food takeout. The price, selection and quantity of food you get is like no other. We went to House of Pepper at the food court, which is one of the more popular places there. This isn’t the typical Square One Chinese food court experience we’re talking about. We are talking about hundreds of dishes to choose from at multiple locations. Each one of these places also offers a catering service. You can buy something for lunch and have leftovers for breakfast the next day. If you are not in the mood for Chinese, you can try Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese as well. The only thing better than taking it out is actually eating there, as House of Pepper has full-size dishes that you can eat directly off the skillet. The only downfall is that this place closes a bit early at 9:00pm.
1 – Noodle Wok
This place has been a Chinese takeout staple for over 30 years. The only thing that has changed about this restaurant is its name (it used be to called “Noodle Delight” back in the day). Besides that, nothing else has changed since I was in high school and that is a good thing. We were there recently and the food is still prepared the same way and possibly by the same cooks. Noodle Wok continues to serve massively huge portions as seen below on the over flowing General Tso Chicken at a reasonable price. They have so much to choose from on the menu, offering everything from beef and egg on rice to shrimp wontons to the best fried chicken wings on this list. Basically, everything on the menu is great and very flavourful! I think I’ve tried almost everything they serve here. Don’t be put off by the décor; you’re not there to be wined and dined. Just take it all to go! They only accept cash, but they do have an ATM on site.
