Too many crashes in Mississauga, city says

Mississauga officials and police are speaking up again in a concerted effort to clamp down on the number of car crashes in the city — particularly those that can and should be avoided.

“Road collisions continue to be a problem in Mississauga. Many residents have lost their lives in road collisions that were preventable or could have been avoided,” a City of Mississauga spokesperson said in a news release on Monday.

Officials note there’s a higher risk of collisions on the roads this time of year. Reduced daylight hours can impact visibility, winter weather can cause challenging road conditions and there are more drivers on the road celebrating the holiday season, they add.

“Whether you’re walking, cycling, taking transit or driving, stay alert and safe when travelling around the city,” officials say, adding motorists and pedestrians — and cyclists, weather permitting — all need to be aware of the potential dangers and take steps to protect themselves and others.

“There’s always a lot to celebrate this time of year, but it’s important to do so responsibly. We want to make sure everyone gets to their destination and home again safely,” said Geoff Wright, Mississauga’s commissioner of transportation and works. “If you’re driving, avoid distractions, drive to weather conditions and don’t drive impaired. You can designate a driver, use MiWay to get around or use a rideshare program or taxi. If you’re walking, cycling, taking transit or using another mode of transportation, remember to stay alert and use crosswalks or crossrides when possible.”

Meanwhile, Peel Regional Police are in the midst of their annual Holiday Season RIDE Campaign aimed at getting drunk, impaired and dangerous drivers off the roads.

They note that distracted driving, in addition to impaired and reckless driving, also continues to be a concern across Canada’s seventh-largest city.

Peel police have again partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada to address the issue of impaired driving.

“Our seasonal RIDE program has already checked over 7,000 vehicles and will continue to early January. Please plan ahead as you enjoy the upcoming holiday season. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911,” said Peel Deputy Chief Marc Andrews.

Both police and city officials also remind motorists to be extra cautious when snowy, icy or rainy weather hits. The roads turn into dangerous surfaces during such conditions, they say.

“The city is prepared to respond to any snowfall or icy conditions to ensure routes are safe and accessible,” Mississauga officials say. “Residents are reminded to stay patient during a snow event. Those driving are reminded to clear snow off their vehicles, give crews and equipment space to work and remove parked cars from their street so crews can work to clear roads.”
