Only driving a short distance was no excuse for leaving a child unbuckled, as Caledon police say charges are pending after stopping a moving vehicle with a toddler not strapped in.
The OPP said on Wednesday that officers had pulled over a vehicle in the Town of Caledon after witnessing a child not buckled up securely.
Police say a toddler was seen “standing on the back seat” by officers, and a picture shared by police shows a grey vehicle with what appears to be a lone adult in the back of the vehicle.
“We’re only going a short way,” the driver allegedly told police as an excuse during the traffic stop.
Police say the driver is facing charges on several offences related to seatbelts, and will be charged via court summons.
Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, drivers must make sure that children under the age of 16 wear a seatbelt and children under the age of 8 are properly secured in the correct child car seat or booster seat.
