Multiple suspects face numerous dangerous driving offences after a street racing crackdown last month.
Incidents of organized groups shutting down Mississauga and Brampton roads to host street races have spiked in recent weeks. This led the Peel Regional Police Street team to monitor a large group from Nov. 18 to 20.
“These street racers committed multiple dangerous driving offences,” said Deputy Chief Mark Andrews, “and engaged in activity that put the safety of our community at risk.” Andrews noted many of these incidents were recorded and posted to social media. Several clips of these offences are in the video below.
In one of the events, dozens of racers flooded Hwy. 427 and blocked it off from other motorists so they could race on it.
Yet another race in Mississauga, between a Corvette and a BMW, resulted in a violent crash just after a Peel Police helicopter saw them racing on Nov. 17. The alleged Corvette driver, Anthony Scalabrelli, 21 or Markham, is charged with numerous street racing offences and public mischief for allegedly lying about the crash.
The alleged BMW driver, Kouroush Jafari, 19 of Toronto, is also charged with dangerous driving and numerous traffic charges. A third man, Kamalpreet Singh, 24 of Brampton, is charged with using a flashing red-and-blue light to impersonate a police car and block the road. He also faces several racing offences.
Andrews added police have seized four cars associated with these events. As the investigation remains ongoing, more charges are expected to be filed.
