Threats lead to arrest of man and seizure of drugs and guns in Niagara

A man is in police custody after allegedly making threats to a former partner, which led to a search warrant and the seizure of drugs and firearms in Niagara.

On Friday (Aug. 30 ) Niagara Regional Police responded to a call about threats being made.

Police say investigations revealed that a man recently contacted a woman with whom he had ended a relationship with in January of this year and allegedly threatened to harm her and damage her property.

The case was taken over by detectives from the NRPS Domestic Violence Unit, who uncovered evidence suggesting the man might be illegally in possession of firearms.

The following day, detectives obtained a search warrant for the man’s home near Glenholme Avenue and High Street in Niagara Falls.

Investigators say several items were seized, including a sawed-off shotgun, high-powered pellet rifles, a BB revolver, 35.5 grams of suspected cocaine, 20.4 grams of suspected fentanyl and 30.2 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine.

A 48-year-old man from Niagara Falls was arrested and is facing multiple charges including two counts of uttering threats, seven counts of failing to comply with a probation order and seven counts of failing to comply with a release order.

He is also charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, fentanyl, and crystal methamphetamine.

Additional charges include possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000, two counts of tampering with a serial number on a firearm,  careless storage of a firearm, knowingly possessing a firearm without a licence and having no firearms licence.

The suspect remains in custody and was scheduled for a video bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on Sept. 1.

Police say his identity is not being released to protect the victim’s privacy.
