The holiday season is nearly here and many Canadians are thinking of international travel.
An overwhelming majority (90 per cent) of hotel and flight searches show Canadians are looking at international destinations for the Christmas and New Year holidays, according to Kayak, an online travel search engine.
Kayak compiled a list of the trendiest and most popular destinations Canadians have on their list. Many of these international locales are also seeing a decrease in price during the holidays, Kayak said in a press release Wednesday.
Trendy locations like Thailand, Japan, the Dominican Republic and Portugal are seeing a rise in searches and a decrease in prices, the release stated.
Flights to Bangkok are down six per cent from Toronto Pearson Airport in Mississauga. Flights from Montreal to Punta Cana are down 15 per cent.
Among the top 10 trending destinations for Ontario residents Bangkok, Tokyo and Paris have seen price drops, according to Kayak.
Earlier this fall, Kayak listed the cheapest domestic and U.S. destinations to visit in December. The searches for these prices were done between March and September 2024. Typically prices increase closer to the travel date.
The cheapest domestic destinations:
- Edmonton, Alberta ($415 average airfare)
- Calgary, Alberta ($514 average airfare)
- Vancouver, British Columbia ($550 average airfare)
- Toronto, Ontario ($581 average airfare)
