Both festivities and accolades were shared in equal amounts at this year’s Canadian Car of the Year Awards (CCOTY). The 2024 ceremony, which was held in Toronto and hosted by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), celebrated all things on four wheels and provided consumers with insight into what is trending in the world of automotive innovation.

The ceremony — which streamlined its format this year — was broken down into four key categories.

These categories included:

  • Canadian Car of the Year
  • Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year
  • Canadian Electric Car of the Year
  • Canadian Electric Utility Vehicle of the Year

The panel of jurors steering the event were from all over Canada and, as a result, presented an unbiased review of all nominees, as they drove each nominated vehicle in identical conditions. While this may seem like standard play to properly review a motor vehicle, the CCOTY is the only motor awards show to enact this kind of procedure in the country.

“We test vehicles from coast to coast on the same roads and same conditions that Canadians experience every day,” said an AJAC spokesperson in an official press release.

The award for the top car of the year went to the Toyota Prius, while the award for best utility vehicle went to the Toyota Grandhighlander SUV.

Additionally, the awards for Canadian Electric Car of the Year and Canadian Electric Utility Vehicle of the Year went to the Genisis Electrified G80 and the Genisis Electrified GV70, respectively.

When it came to the reasoning behind the decisions of the jurors, AJAC stated,

“Our depth of experience and expertise is how we know Canadians can count on assessments.”
