There’s room on the ballot to become a Mississauga city councillor

From potholes to public meetings and ribbon cuttings to the Rotary Ribfest, the job of Mississauga city councillor can be yours.
While those responsibilities and duties are part of the job description, so too is working with fellow councillors, staff, upper levels of government and others to help chart a course for the future of Mississauga.
Those interested in challenging any of the sitting City of Mississauga councillors, or in vying for the open Ward 2 seat, in this fall’s municipal election can take part in a candidate information session taking place on April 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
The session, hosted by City staff and Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, also welcomes those wanting to seek school board trustee positions on either of the city’s two school boards.
It’s open to those who simply want to learn more about the process as well in advance of this year’s election, slated for Oct. 24. Nominations for all positions open on May 2.
At the session, which is being hosted both in-person at City Hall and virtually, information will be provided on:
- election rules in the Municipal Elections Act
- details about becoming a candidate and the nomination process
- election technology that will be used in the election
- use of City resources during an election campaign
The Mississauga Ward 2 seat is currently occupied by Councillor Pat Mullin, who filled the vacancy created when former councillor Karen Ras resigned earlier this year.
Mullin’s term will end on Nov. 14, when the new Council takes the reins.
Individuals planning to attend the April 8 session virtually are asked to register in advance.
Those who want to attend in person are asked to email [email protected].
