What’s Closed & Open Thanksgiving in Ontario cities Oct. 14, 2024

This year, Thanksgiving Monday falls on Oct. 14, 2024 in Ontario.

Thanksgiving has been officially celebrated as an annual holiday in Canada since Nov. 6, 1879, typically taking place on the second Monday in October.

On Jan. 31, 1957, Vincent Massey, Governor General of Canada, issued a proclamation stating, “A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed – to be observed on the second Monday in October.”

Unlike its counterpart in the U.S., the Canadian celebration takes place earlier in the fall to coincide with the harvest season in the colder country.

Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday throughout the country, except in the Atlantic provinces of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, where the holiday is optional.
