Teen girls can learn about firefighting careers at Blaze Academy in Oakville, Burlington, Milton

Registration is now open for girls ages 15 to 18 in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills to attend the Blaze Fire Academy.

Blaze Fire Academy is the female firefighting leadership program for high school students in Halton Region.

The goal is to provide a fire service introduction and basic working knowledge to females who may not have considered the possibility of pursuing a career in the fire service.

This program will also include information and experiences related to the following fire service fields: fire prevention and public education; training; fire investigation; fire code enforcement; and communications.

The Blaze Fire Academy for Young Women is taking place on Aug. 14 and 15, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The deadline to submit an application is July 25 at 4 p.m.

In addition to training and information, participants will also have an opportunity to perform many firefighting tasks, including:

  • Basic firefighting skills
  • Catching fire hydrants
  • Managing hose lines
  • Personal protective equipment orientation
  • Search and rescue operations
  • Auto extrication rescues
  • Use of aerial and ground ladders
  • Forcible entry procedures

To qualify, you must be:

  • a resident of Halton Region and currently attending a Halton high school
  • in good physical condition and have a positive attitude
  • in possession of a valid provincial health card
  • able to supply your own CSA safety footwear (all other personal protective equipment will be supplied to the participants)
  • able to provide your own transportation to and from the Oakville Fire Department Training Campus for Emergency Excellence, 1144 South Service Rd. W.
  • committed to attend all Blaze Fire Academy activities
