Brampton taxi cab fare increase

Changes to taxicab tariffs and licensing fees will see fares increase in Brampton beginning Jan. 1.

The city is increasing the tariff for passengers which is being done to support the local taxicab industry which is facing higher operating costs. New regulations will at the same time reduce licensing fees meant to provide financial relief to the industry.

Under a bylaw approved this week, a taxi ride broker deposit of up to $20 can now be required anytime, instead of only after hours.

As well, the initial fare for taxicabs will rise by 9.5 per cent from $4.25 to $4.75 for the first 125 metres and $0.25 for each additional 125 meters.

The city is also reducing the annual licensing fees for taxicab owners and drivers by $100 to $418.

A taxicab tariff is the regulated fare structure that determines the rates passengers pay for taxi services, including initial fares, rates per kilometre, waiting time fees and other associated costs.

In a statement, the city said that these changes aim to address economic challenges faced by the taxicab sector.

“By ensuring a sustainable and competitive industry, these changes will help reinforce reliable transportation options and commuting choices for residents,” the statement reads.

These changes don’t apply to rideshare operators such as Uber.
