Taxes will be going up to help bridge an “infrastructure funding gap” in the 2025 Caledon budget, the mayor says.
This week the Town of Caledon tabled its budget for the upcoming year at a total of $202 million, made up of $146 million in operating costs and $56 million in capital investments.
The budget will also see property taxes go up, and a continuation of an annual levy.
Property owners can expect to see a tax increase of 2 per cent along with the annual infrastructure levy of 1 per cent, for a total tax increase of 3 per cent in 2025.
“While no one wants a tax increase, this modest adjustment is necessary to support the long-term sustainability of Caledon and the responsible move for the community’s future,” Mayor Annett Groves said of her budget presented on Monday.
The $146 million operating budget covers Caledon’s maintenance, materials and employment costs, while the $56 million in capital investments will help fund projects like the new Mayfield West Fire Station, upgrades at the Caledon Centre for Recreation & Wellness, and vehicles for Municipal Law Enforcement officers.
Funds collected from the levy will go towards “closing the infrastructure funding gap,” the town says.
Caledon Town Council will review the mayor’s budget and propose amendments to the budget at a meeting next week before final approval on Dec. 17.
