One man is in custody after what started as a medical call turned into a “suspicious” fire investigation, police say.

The blaze happened around 3:40 a.m. on Friday when emergency crews were called to a new construction home on Sapwood Crescent in Brampton.

Peel Regional Police say they initially received a 911 call for a medical assist in the area of Kennedy Road and Mayfield Road, but that call turned into a fire response.

When firefighters arrived on scene the home was fully involved according to Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES), and a photo shows a cloud of smoke surrounding the home as emergency crews work nearby.

An adult male was transported from the scene to a local hospital in serious condition, a spokesperson for Peel Paramedic Services has confirmed.

Police now say the fire is being investigated as “suspicious” and that officers have a male in his 20s, who is currently in hospital, in custody.

The investigation is still in its early stages, and BFES said in a post on social media that the home was a new build. Sapwood Crescent in a new community just south of Mayfield Road.
