One of Durham Regional Police’s newer inventions continues to net results with the recovery of a stolen car in Pickering.
On June 24, officers were on patrol near Liverpool Rd. and Wharf St. in a cruiser equipped with Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR). The service recently upgraded to this technology to read license plates to flag stolen cars, suspended drivers and expired plates.
The system was funded by a $2.5 million provincial grant late last year.
The system flagged a licence plate on a car reported stolen in the patrol. The officer approached the car and arrested a man walking away from it.
A 34-year-old man from Quebec is charged with possession of stolen property and failure to comply with a release order.
