$100M deal signed with Elon Musk’s Starlink and the Ontario government

The Ontario government says it is partnering with Elon Musk’s Starlink to expand internet access in the province.

In a news release, the government said that it is launching the Ontario Satellite Internet (ONSAT) program, “which will offer high-speed satellite internet access to 15,000 eligible unserved and underserved homes and businesses, including in rural, remote and northern communities.”

Service will be available beginning in June 2025 through the program.

Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma said the government is happy to work with Starlink “to offer a highly advanced satellite internet service” for residents living and working in areas that are the hardest to reach with conventional high-speed internet technology.

“Our government knows how essential it is to have access to online services and supports, which is why we are using all viable options and technologies, including fibre, fixed wireless and satellite to ensure every community across the province has access by the end of 2025,” she said.

Additional details and registration information for eligible homes and businesses through ONSAT will be available in the Spring, the government said.

The province will cover equipment and installation costs, but not monthly fees.

“It is an investment of close to $100 million,” Surma said.

The province said the program is part of its almost $4 billion investment to help bring high-speed internet access to every community in Ontario by the end of next year.

It has so far invested $2.5 billion in 270 projects, Surma said. That has connected 100,000 Ontarians to high-speed internet, and there are plans to connect 450,000 more.
